What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy recognises the importance of the link between the structure of the human body and the way it functions. Osteopaths focus on the musculoskeletal system, (better known as your body’s skeleton) and joint functions along with the underlying muscles, soft tissue and internal organs. To an osteopath, for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. So osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery.
Osteopaths consider each person as an individual. Utilising a highly developed sense of touch, they identify problem areas of the body. Using stretching and mobilising techniques as well as manipulating joints to relieve muscle tension to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, an osteopath works with the body to create the perfect conditions to facilitate the healing process.
Treatment usually consists of a combination of soft-tissue releasing techniques, and some specific adjustments affecting joints muscles, tendons and ligaments. Advice can also be given on self-help treatments such as posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
How and why the body doesn't function correctly can be caused in many ways, Rather than being caused by a single incident, most back and neck disorders tend to result from a combination of poor posture, overuse through sport, injury, incorrect lifting. Often stressful living and bad habits which have been allowed to develop over the years until the body decides it has had enough the strains and misuse manifest as pain.
Months or years may pass before a combination of these factors results in an actual disorder. Osteopaths assess and consider all these contributing factors when treating patients hands-on and giving advice on lifestyle issues in orderd to prevent recurrent episodes of problems.
